On February 1st, 2017, Young Africa’s highly innovative solution for youth unemployment in southern Africa was added to the UNESCO-UNEVOC Promising Practices database, one of just four practices from around the world added to the list this year. UNESCO-UNEVOC is a UN institute working in the field of education. As part of its work, a team of experts from around the world identifies and selects the most promising practices in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector.
The Integral Youth Empowerment Programme
Young Africa’s Integral Youth Empowerment Programme is our unique approach to youth development. It involves vocational training integrated with Entrepreneurship, Life Skills and talent development, giving graduates the tools to find employment or become self-employed.
Innovative Franchise Model for financial self-sustainability
Vocational training is expensive and often not market-related. In response, Young Africa has developed the innovative Franchise Model. All training departments at our centres are rented to local entrepreneurs to run their businesses. At the same time they teach students, taking responsibility to pass on their skills to the young people of their communities. The rental of these workshops leads to financial self-sustainability of the training centres.
Big problems require bold solutions
A staggering 230 million people in Africa are between 15 and 24 years old, of which between 30 and 50% are unemployed. Young Africa currently works in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia, but has set the ambition to expand and educate 500,000 young people across southern Africa by 2025. This recognition by UNESCO-UNEVOC puts Young Africa on the map in the international community, and will hopefully trigger other NGOs and donors to join us in this ambition.
